Random Wednesdays: Queen of the Black Gate (Excerpt)

Hello my lovelies! I hope the week has been treating you well so far and I’m very glad you could join me for the midweek edition :).

fantasy1Queen of the Black Gate is my dark fantasy novel which will be released later in 2015. Below is a short unedited excerpt from the story and focuses on Targo and Lilith, two of protagonist Aeshma’s guardians. As we enter, Targo unwillingly remembers the past, while Lilith tries to bring it into the present. Enjoy :):

Queen of the Black Gate (Excerpt)

fantasy1~ Targo looked at her for a moment. She’d worn this corpse for a few centuries, yet he still wasn’t accustomed to it. He remembered when her skin was ebony and her hair white. Remembered those brown eyes that always looked at him with such mischief, whenever they’d lain together. As if she had some secret that only she knew and he never would. He didn’t know this green-eyed woman before him now.

“I’m sorry I missed that. I would have loved to see you work on the great beast!”

“You would have been unimpressed, on his knees he was no taller than me.”

fantasy1“Well you are not exactly a slight of a man Targo,” she said smiling at him in the dark, “This corpse of yours might be old and long since worn, but it is still as formidable as it was the day we took it.” Targo remembered that time like it was moments before. The Egyptian whose body he wore had been a great man in wealth and stature. Targo had watched him and waited. They did not take from the living as the angels did and his wait could have been forever, but Targo knew that if there was one thing a demon had, it was time.

“What is it you want Lilith?” Targo asked, growing tired of memory lane.

“You are the only one I’ve ever been able to speak freely with Targo, can you not be my company for a little while?”

“Lilith, this is not . . .”

fantasy1“Targo,” she whispered sharply and he felt her tense. Her warning was unnecessary though, because he had heard it too. Targo stood quickly, his eyes scanning the darkness and Lilith, no longer in the mood for talk, stood beside him, pulling her battle axe from her side. Moments later it seemed the ravens had also realised something was amiss and their guttural murmurings grew into loud squawks as they raised the alarm. Something was coming and by now the whole of the Black Gate would know. The two stood perfectly still, side by side as they had so many times before, when finally they saw them coming… ~

Queen of the Black Gate is a favourite of mine as the protagonist and the other characters that drive the story, remind me of the first fantasy story I attempted over a decade ago. It was also a favourite WIP of my late dear friend P.R. Steal and for that I am even more excited to eventually share this world with you all :).
