A long while ago I wrote a Random Wednesdays’ post called ‘Kill Your Darlings’ which focused on killing off characters when it was required, despite a writer’s undying love for them all.
Today I want to briefly touch on letting our characters be who they are, with no apologies.
Sometimes as writers we allow ourselves to fit into the mould of what’s expected of us and our stories. We follow the trends to the letter and can even lose our voice if we’re not careful. The story and world-building aren’t the only things that suffer from this, but our characters as well. They have to sit around patiently, watching their personalities be ripped to shreds, while they’re powerless to stop it. They wail in the dark corners of our computer screens, hoping we’ll find our way back and if we don’t, they settle for the worst — to be published as they never were intended.
We need to let our characters be who they are. Explore the vastness of the personalities they were ‘born’ with and see how they handle situations without prompting from the audience. Not only does this make for better writing and reading overall, but it creates characters who are seldom forgettable.
How do you create new characters? Tell me about it in the comments below :)!
Wishing you all a great evening and I’ll see you Friday ^_^!
Please note: After this long break the beginning of Chapter 16: Glamorous Lies, will be posted on ‘Jackie Jones on Wattpad.’. Look out for the Awakening Character Guide soon and catch up with the story using the link above, as with only FIVE chapters left, you’ll want to catch up ^_^.
Remember you can also contact me for information about facilitating reviews, interviews, etc on this blog site ^_^.
