As I’ve mentioned before in these pages, I’ve always had a fascination for the lore surrounding many of the supernatural beings present in fiction. Even though Halloween is not treated as a big celebration here in the islands, in the last years I’ve developed my own tradition of sorts, where I give myself an excuse to indulge in all the horror, blood and gore I can take, throughout October. I haven’t been able to begin as yet, but as I did last week, was sorting through some old writings and came across another that featured a character that I’ve always wanted to develop and as such, have put the short story in the pile of ‘those to be revisited in the near future’. Enjoy a very short excerpt from The True Tale of Bloody Mary :).
~ The villagers watched as her soul disappeared into the mirrored restraint. Dark mists enveloped the looking glass and swirled violently as onlookers waited unsure of what would happen next. Moments later, as silence descended and the villagers held their breaths in worried anticipation, the mirror went blank. The silence deepened until someone gasped. The villagers jumped visibly back, fear overtaking all other feeling, for there in the mirror they could see her eyes. Only, no longer were they accompanying her pretty smiles, bright and clearest blue, but blood red. She screamed at them, a sound that could not be heard, yet sent many to their knees, begging for the forgiveness of the gods. ~
